Short answer: for an older person in the UK, choose a provider that puts insurance in writing, includes packing, gives you one person to deal with and works at an unhurried pace. Price matters, but a cheap quote that leaves out packing and settling in can cost more in stress. Get every answer in writing.

What matters most
- Insurance in writing. Ask what is covered against loss or damage in transit, and up to what value. It should be in the service agreement before anything is booked.
- Packing included. Packing a family home is tiring. A team that packs, labels by destination room and keeps essentials accessible removes the heaviest part of the job.
- One point of contact. Being passed between a sales team, a crew and an office is confusing. One coordinator who knows the situation makes it much easier.
- Patience and clarity. The crew should explain what is happening, check where furniture goes and never rush decisions.
- A clear written quote. It should say what is included, what is not and what could change the price.
Questions to ask before you book
Price
- What is included and excluded? Is the quote fixed, or can it change on the day?
- Are packing materials and packing labour included?
- Are there extra charges for stairs, parking or waiting time?
Insurance and handling
- What is covered, and is the cover stated in the written agreement?
- How are fragile and valuable items handled?
The day itself
- Who will be at the property, and who is my contact if something changes?
- How long will it take, and what happens if there is a delay?
- Will furniture be protected and reassembled at the other end?
Flexibility
- How are date changes handled, and with how much notice?
If the company is a member of a trade body, such as the British Association of Removers, ask what that membership means for you and check it with the body directly.
Removals company or relocation partner?
A standard removals firm collects and delivers. A relocation partner also covers sorting, estate agent and solicitor liaison, cleaning and settling in. Neither is better in every case: a simple local move with family on hand may need only good removals, while a move involving a house sale, downsizing or a parent living at a distance often benefits from one coordinated service. Our guide to what a full-service removals company does explains the difference. For the cost side, see what an elderly move costs.
Where Chayce Properties fits
Chayce arranges insured removals and full-service moves for older people, with packing, unpacking and one dedicated coordinator. Every Chayce removal is fully insured, with the details set out in your service agreement before the move begins. How it works shows the process step by step, and our page on elderly move managers explains the role. A Discovery Consultation, £150, gives you a plan and budget before you commit.
